Boise School District is a comprehensive public school district in Boise, Idaho, U.S.A. The district is officially known as the Independent School District of Boise City, Idaho. The school district was started in 1865 by the governor of the Idaho Territory. Formerly the largest school district in the state, it now ranks second to the adjacent Meridian School District. The above reference is to an act in 1881 by the Idaho territorial legislature which created the school districts. Boise's is the second oldest school system in Idaho behind Lewiston, which started in 1862, when Idaho was still in the Washington Territory. Ironically both have the designation of Independent School District #1. This is often attributed to a petty jealousy that somehow the new capital should be called #1, rather than the oldest. Lewiston, Idaho's oldest existing incorporated permanent settlement (and second settlement), dating from the Washington Territory in 1861, was also Idaho Territory's first capital, 1863-1866.
